General Questions
What is the life expectancy of my HVAC system?
Most properly installed HVAC systems last 12–15 years, and well-maintained units can push past 20. The biggest factors are how often the system runs, the make and model, whether it was sized correctly for your home, and — by far the most important — whether it has been serviced regularly. A unit that gets a tune-up every spring and fall typically lasts 3–5 years longer than one that doesn't.
Do you provide a free estimate on repairs?
We provide free estimates on full system replacements and new installations — no charge to come out, look at the space, and quote the job. For repairs on an existing system, we charge a flat diagnostic fee (see below) because diagnosing the problem is the work.
What is the difference between a free estimate and a diagnostic?
An estimate is a price for new equipment or a defined project — replacing a furnace, installing a new AC, adding ductwork. A diagnostic is paid troubleshooting on an existing system: the tech tests components, identifies the failure, and gives you a written repair quote. Estimates are free; diagnostics are billed because they take real bench time.
What services do you provide?
Heating and cooling repair, replacement and installation — furnaces, boilers, central AC, heat pumps, mini-splits, and ductwork. We also do indoor air quality work (humidifiers, filtration, UV), water heater service, and seasonal maintenance plans. If it heats, cools, or moves air in your home, we handle it.
Service & Pricing
How much is your diagnostic fee and what does it cover?
The diagnostic fee covers the trip out, a full system inspection, and the tech's time to identify the exact cause of the failure. You walk away with a written repair quote — no guessing, no "we'll call you back." Call our office for the current rate; we tell you the price up front before we dispatch.
Can my diagnostic fee be applied toward the cost of my repair?
Yes. If you approve the repair on the same visit, we apply the diagnostic fee directly to the repair total — you pay for one or the other, never both.
How long are your appointment windows? Why are they so long?
We schedule in 2-hour windows because every job is different — a quick capacitor swap takes 30 minutes, a stuck blower motor takes three hours. Padding the schedule lets us finish each job properly instead of rushing out the door. The dispatcher also calls 30 minutes before the tech arrives, so you're never sitting around guessing.
Do you offer emergency service?
Yes — 24/7, 365 days a year. If your furnace quits at 2 AM in January or your AC dies on the hottest weekend of July, call the main number and you'll get a real person, not a voicemail. Same-day service on most calls inside our service area.
Maintenance & Equipment
What is included in your maintenance package?
Two visits a year — one in spring for the AC, one in fall for the heat. Each visit covers a full system inspection, cleaning of the coils and burners, refrigerant and pressure check, electrical and safety test, and filter replacement. Members also get priority scheduling and a discount on any repairs.
How often should I change my air filter?
For a standard 1-inch pleated filter, every 1–3 months — more often if you have pets or allergies. Thicker 4–5 inch media filters last 6–12 months. A clogged filter is the single most common cause of a "broken" system that turns out to be fine.
When should I replace my system instead of repairing it?
Three rough rules: the system is over 12–15 years old, the repair costs more than half of a replacement, or you're calling for repairs more than once a year. New systems also run 20–40% more efficiently than units from a decade ago, so the energy savings often cover a chunk of the upgrade cost. We'll lay out both options on the quote — it's your call, not ours.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Every tech in our trucks is licensed in Massachusetts, fully insured, and NATE-certified. We carry liability and workers' comp on all crew, and we don't use subcontractors — the person at your door works for us.
